Update on the first workshop
We had nine participants at February 2006 workshop. Check out the summary page for information on the speakers, presentations, and handouts.

Two more workshops are planned for fall 2006 and spring 2007. Stay tuned for details.

Climate Change in the News
In the last few years climate change has become big news in Arizona, with extended drought, record temperatures, and devastating wildfires all capturing headlines. This has prompted states like Arizona to implement their own initiatives on climate change to address what may be in store.

These issues extend beyond the science pages of major newspapers and are becoming increasingly important for reporters covering business, agricultural issues, the environment, and state and local politics.

About the Workshop
This workshop is a full-day immersion into the science behind climate change to aid you in covering these issues. You’ll learn about how climatic changes are already starting to impact your area and projections for what we expect in the future. In addition, you’ll see some of the tools researchers use in detecting changes in our environment and making the scientific case for global warming.

Topics include:

  • What drives climate in the Southwest
  • How climate change already impacts Arizona
  • Regional projections for the future
  • Use of tree-rings and other natural archives
  • Fire mapping from space
  • Assessing rangelands in Arizona
  • Roundtable with UA faculty on climate change and water.

How to Participate
Reporters from Arizona newspaper, radio, and TV outlets are invited to apply to the workshop. Space is limited and tuition and all workshop costs will be covered for those selected. In addition, funding is available to cover travel costs for those who work outside the Tucson area.

The dates for the next two workshops have not been set. Contact Shoshana Mayden, (520) 792-8712, smayden@email.arizona.edu, for more information.

Directions and Parking
The workshop will be held in Forbes Room 124 at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Parking is available in the 6th Street Garage (1201 E 6th St) for $8. Save your receipt for reimbursement.
