Governor Janet Napolitano signed a drought declaration for Arizona on May 22, 2007, calling upon citizens, businesses, schools, institutions of higher learning, and public agencies to increase water conservation efforts. The declaration comes as Arizona enters its second decade of a statewide drought due to long-term precipitation deficits and increased demand for water

Researchers at the UA and the University of New Mexico say La Niņa conditions, like those that developed earlier in 2006, could signal a stronger monsoon. But, they warn, the forces that control the timing and strength of monsoons are not fully understood.

In the grip of one of the state's worst droughts on record, business for Arizona's ski resorts dried up with the weather for much of the 2005-06 season, leaving the industry and its snow-dependent communities with potentially millions of dollars in lost revenue. UA researchers say the drought likely will cost many more millions of dollars if it persists.
